A personal reflection on Black British history, activism, theatre and the creation of Black Power Desk.
I wrote this piece for The Big Issue ahead of the opening of Black Power Desk.
In it, I reflect on growing up without being taught about Black British history, discovering the stories of the Mangrove Nine, and why those histories became the starting point for creating a musical rooted in Black British experience.
I also explore the questions at the heart of the work — particularly the cost of activism, Black humanity, and what happens when we ask whether resistance and a full life can coexist.
